What is a CT scan?

The CT scan is one of the easiest, safest, and most valuable windows into the human body. A CT scan is an innovative, new procedure that can show detailed, cross-sectional images of all parts of the body. It provides your physician with a completely unobstructed look at your body that far surpasses conventional X-ray techniques. With just a simple pain-free CT scan an intricate picture of your body is presented, allowing for a wide array of more precise medical diagnosis. For a more detailed summary of a CT scan, please check our What is a CT scan page.

Who is a candidate for a CT scan?

Common risk factors include, but are not limited to the following:
* Men over 35 and Women over 40 years old

* Current or former smoker

Do I need a Doctor's referral?

No, Affiliated Medical of Dearborn allows you the opportunity to take advantage of our medical care before symptoms occur - without waiting for approval from your health insurance company. A doctor's referral is not at all needed for you to begin actively preventing disease and illness in your life. Simply call our office at 313-563-0773 to schedule an appointment or to discuss which CT screening options best suit your health and wellness needs.

What should I wear the day of my examination?

Clothing and Attire is up to the patient's discretion although it is recommended that you dress in comfortable clothing. Also, metallic objects will be asked to be removed before taking your scan.

What should I do before coming to my examination?

Preparation for your Affiliated Medical examination is a cinch. There is none! It's just as simple as getting ready for a regular doctor's appointment or an X-ray exam.

What do I have to do during the examination?

The Affiliated Medical center is devoted to comfortable, fast, and accurate health care screening. Minimal preparation is required. The entire procedure takes roughly about a half-hour's time and there is no evasion whatsoever. It's just one of those things you can do on your lunch hour. Depending on your particular procedure, the screening will capture up to several hundred high-resolution images of your body while you comfortably lie on your stomach or back. The actual scan will take less than a single breath. Every Affiliated Medical scan is comfortable and private. In fact, you don't even need to remove your clothes. For more information, please check our Procedure page.

When will I receive my results?

Immediately following your scan, you will receive a personal consultation with our expert radiologist, Dr. Tony Bennett. He will present images of the vital organs in your body and any problem areas you may have. The radiologist will also answer any questions you and you will walk out with a CD-ROM of your images for your personal records.

Are there any risks associated with CT Scanning?

No. CT Scanning is considered a completely safe procedure. CT does involve some exposure to radiation, similar to the radiation you would receive from an X-ray. However, the amount of radiation you receive from a CT procedure is quite insignificant. In fact, the amount of radiation you do receive is equivalent to the amount of radiation you would receive in 3 years from natural sources such as the sun.

Is my CT scanning session covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage on CT screening exams is variable and thus depends upon the individual basis of the patient. Insurance has been known to provide coverage in cases where disease symptoms have been officially diagnosed, so you should check both with your doctor and insurance company regarding this issue. For more information regarding your particular case, please email us help@amdmd.com or call Affiliated Medical of Dearborn at 313-563-0773. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork so that you may submit your CT screening exam for reimbursement.

What are the estimated costs for CT procedures?

Rough price estimates for some various CT exams are as follows: Cardiac Scoring ($250), Single organ scan ($350), Virtual Colonoscopy ($700), Lung Screening ($350), and Total Body Scan ($700) which includes scans of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and head.

Can I have a CT exam if I am Pregnant?

No, pregnant women should not have a CT exam or an X-ray for that matter. Depending upon the condition, there may be other exams available, such as ultrasound, to help diagnose a medical condition. Please ask your doctor.
