Early Detection of Coronary Calcification

Detection of coronary calcification with CT has proven to be an effective method for identifying early atherosclerosis even before obstruction occurs and at a time when specific treatment and intensive risk factor reduction can prevent life-threatening cardiac events. CT can identify a patient with individualized evidence of coronary disease already existing. These patients are at risk both now as well as in the future and can benefit significantly from risk modification. The amount of coronary calcification detected is proportional to the total coronary atherosclerotic burden, and CT is quite complimentary to the assessment of the general population risk factors just as cholesterol level measurement.

Lung Cancer Screening

Unfortunately 30% of our population continues to smoke and is at risk for developing lung cancer. Lung cancer is now the second leading cause of death in our country behind heart disease but far ahead of breast and other forms of cancer. CT can detect very early masses before symptoms even begin to ever occur.
